Our most exciting product to date incorporates SFM's nanotechnology (Titan) into modified cellulose fabric.

The use of nanotechnology in medical applications has grown rapidly in recent years¹. Of all the nanoparticles available currently, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have attracted the most attention due to their potential as novel antibacterial agents. They exhibit relatively low cytotoxicity to human cells and broad spectrum activity² ³. SFM have established proprietary technology in the development of cellulose fibres with AgNPs, which are used to form highly absorbent, antibacterial wound dressings. Such wound dressings possess the ability to maintain a moist wound environment and are also able to control common wound pathogens due to their sustained bactericidal activity.

Characterisation of the AgNPs and wound dressings has been performed using SEM/TEM (scanning electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy) analysis. The image above shows a typical prepared cross section through a representative specimen of the Modified Cellulose sample and an image of the same showing the elemental distribution (C carbon; O oxygen; Ag silver) in this region. The image shows that the higher contrast region is due to the presence of silver.
