Micropake® is an X-ray detectable yarn based on polypropylene. The thread is typically made up of 40 filaments wrapped with a fine polyester thread and can be manufactured in a range of linear densities to suit customer specifications. This provides a key advantage in that the multi-filament thread is soft and flexible in nature, which when coupled with good tensile strength, allows Micropake® to be woven. The yarn may also be thermally or ultrasonically bonded to fabrics.

Micropake® has an enviable safety history of use having been employed as a marker thread in surgical swabs for more than thirty years.

Wet Spinning

Micropake® meets European Standards for radiopacity, combined with the unique ability to be incorporated into surgical gauze which requires a thread to be more flexible.

It is a European market leader and is used worldwide in the manufacture of X-ray detectable gauze swabs and sponges, using both woven and non-woven fabrics.

Melt spun from polypropylene and loaded with 60% barium sulphate, Micropake meets the X-ray opacity requirements of the British Pharmacopoeia.

Key advantages of alginate fibre include:

  • Good radiopacity
  • High strength and flexibility allowing it to be woven
  • Meets toxicological standards - ISO 10993
  • Can be sterilised
  • The yarn is insoluble in water and most common organic solvents.
  • Current colours blue and black - other colours can be made available upon request
