Fibre & Fabric Development

Fibre and Fabric Development

SFM have great expertise in the development and manufacture of fibres and fabrics within the healthcare market.  With the facilities and resources to generate fabric from a few grams of fibre or polymer upwards, SFM are ideally placed to provide material for feasibility studies through to product and volumes suitable for stability testing and beyond in to full production.

Wet spinning

The conversion of polymers derived from naturally occurring materials into fibres and products with novel performance characteristics is a particular expertise of SFM.  With pilot equipment capable of spinning as little as a hundred grams of polymer through to commercial scale equipment, SFM are well placed to develop fibres and non-wovens using this technique.

Non-woven Fabric Development

Our facilities including a card and cross-folder, coupled with a modern needle loom are ideal for the development of non-woven fabrics.  Located in an ISO Class 8 clean room SFM’s facilities are suitable for the production of samples for research or development purposes, for biocompatibility or stability studies to support regulatory submissions or even for launch material.  We have particular expertise in the handling and processing of fibres that are normally difficult to process.

Chemical Modification of Fibres

Performed using custom built equipment in an ATEX rated environment this technique has enabled the successful creation of a new range of products based upon the chemical modification of established fibres. This technique offers almost limitless possibilities for the development of materials with unique properties, such as the development of highly absorbent fibres.
